BFH Museum Design Planning Takes Shape: Recent Happenings

February 11, 2014

The BFH Memorial Museum is gradually beginning to take shape.  Alumni Carol Kana (’64), Eugene Berger (“62) and Kenneth Miksch (’76) met with Charles Fleming of the design team at the KC Hall in Schulenburg  on November 19th to address building/construction concepts for the overall project.  The very next day, several other BFH alumni and Carol Kana loaded and transferred  the stored BFH memorabilia to a loft at the future museum site at Blinn College in Schulenburg.

A preliminary review of collected BFH museum items was conducted at the museum site on December 12, 2013 by Charles Fleming and Carol Kana.  The items collected thus far revealed so many treasures in each box of items that were examined.  Included in those treasures were many BFH yearbooks, scrapbooks that were started in the initial years, even photos of the construction of the school.  Add to this, lots of trophies, sports wear and even two football  helmets.   Even the original metal signage letters from the outside of the original building – BISHOP FOREST HIGH SCHOOL – were found, but a few are missing.   It was also at this time that the initial payment for Phase One development of the new museum was made by the association to the museum developers.  BFH alumni are invited to attend the next meeting with the design team. Contact Carol Kana an she will send you an invite.

Donations all all kinds are needed now, including additional BFH memorabilia, cash donations, or pledges for financial support.  One local organization and a family have offered to help support the development of the museum project, but those offers have yet to be received by the association.

If you know of anyone who can help converting movie film from the 1960’s to digital format, contact Carol Kana.  She will be glad to hear from you.

OK BFH Alumni, let’s “Keep the green and white alive!”

Work Progressing on Bishop Forest Museum

All Bishop Forest alumni, friends, and concerned individuals are reminded of the ongoing activity for completion of the Bishop Forest Museum in Schulenburg.

Memorabilia from all phases of the school’s history, from 1954-1989, is being sought.  These items will be protected and displayed with the professional guidance of museumist Charles Fleming of Southwest Museum Services.  Architect, Brad Cutright of Cutright & Allen, has created the design.  A completion of late 2014 is anticipated.

Donations are also actively solicited and can be made in memory of a loved one.  Because the Bishop Forest Alumni Association is an official state recognized 501c(3) organization, contributions are tax-deductible and will be acknowledged by return mail.  The donations received will help preserve the activities and dedication of many individuals during the school’s history.

BFH Alumni: We Need Your Help Now!

The BFH Museum preparations are in full swing right now and your help is needed.  Go dig out that box of old BFH keepsakes you stashed away years ago and check out what is in it.  How about some of those old Kodak camera pictures you took back when you were in school.  We know you have pictures of you and your classmates and teachers.  How about some of those senior prom pictures or homecoming game corsage ribbons?  How about some BFH car or window stickers you stashed away in your high school scrapbook, or senior play program or band trophies or medals?  Hey former BFH athletes, do you have any sports medals or ribbons you could share right now?  The new museum design staff needs items like these, and others, for the displays in the museum. You can give them to the museum if you feel you can part with them, or you can place them on loan with the museum, and retain ownership of the items.

Bids To Be Opened September 9 For Catholic School In Schulenburg

“Bishop Forest High School” is the Name of the New Catholic High School

Plans are nearing completion for the erection in Schulenburg of one of the most modern High School plants ever designed for the Southwest.  Blueprints and specifications for the school, to be known as “Bishop Forest High School” were sent to prospective bidders about a month ago and bids will be opened in San Antonio on Friday, September 9.  Bishop Forest High School, intended for Catholic pupils of the Weimar Deanery, is expected to be ready for occupancy by September 1956.

The entire framework of the building including the floor and roof slabs will be built of steel-reinforced concrete and the walls will be face brick, with the execption of the north and south walls of the classroom wing which are of continuous steel-sash windows extending from the floor to the ceiling.  The interior walls will be of painted structural tile.  The building will consist of three units, viz: The classroom wing, the Administrative wing and multi-purpose wing.

The classroom wing will contain, in addition to five regular classroooms, a Library-Study Hall with space for reading, work and book storage, a Science Department for instruction in Chemistry, Physics and Biology, a Home Economics Department with Food and Clothing Laboratories, a Lounge where students may gather for relaxation between periods of instruction and study, and rest-rooms.

The multi-purpose area may be used as a cafeteria, auditorium and gymnasium, having a stage and dressing-rooms and showers at one end and a fully equipped kitchen for cafeteria serving at the other end.

The Administrative Wing, which sets just back of the main entrance Terrace and Foyer, contains a Reception Room with business office and counter for Secretary with space for the filing and storage of records.  Back of this secretarial section will be a study, lounge and work area with rest-rooms for the faculty members.

Along the front of the building will be a drive and walk which will enter from one street and exit on another.

The school will be built on the west side of an eleven acre tract of land which is situated on the south side of Black Street at the eastern edge of the city limits.

BFHS Alumni Discuss the New Museum Project

An inquisitive group of BFHS alumni met at the old Bishop Forest High School campus on Saturday, February 23, 2013, at 1PM to review and discuss the proposed plans for the new Bishop Forest Alumni Memorial Museum destined for a portion of the old gym at BFHS. The meeting was led by Judge Ed Janecka and twenty one alumni listened attentively as architect Brad Cutright of Cutright & Allen Architects shared a screen presentation revealing the floor plan drawing of the gym that will be dedicated to the new museum. Roughly one third of the North end of the gym will be occupied by the museum.  Mr. Cutright also showed a cross section view of the North part of the museum with a door to the North exit.  Alumni were also treated to an architectural view of the museum space with a staircase and balcony section on the west wall of the museum space.  A fourth drawing view showed a view of the space looking down into the proposed museum section of the old gym.

Charles Fleming of Southwest Museum Services, whose company designed and deployed many notable museums in Texas, the nation and abroad, will create the museum displays in a proposal based on what life was like in the school. His company will address the task of producing “what do you want visitors to see when they get there?” Fleming stated that “a good timeframe from start to finish is about 12 months.  The big time consumer is getting the museum materials together. If we assemble the yearbooks and artifacts, and get the design team to look at design concepts, that would take 6-8 weeks.”

The next step in the museum process is to decide what BFHS matrials will go into the museum.  Should the museum content be divided up by school year, by sports, or school activities?  Judge Jenecka stated that alumni need to provide ideas now on what they would like to see in the museum. One alumnus proposed that videos be made of faculty members who served during the BFHS years.  All alumni are urged to share their ideas on what they think the museum should look like with the Bishop forest Alumni Association leadership.

The museum leadership committee is now soliciting names of alumni who will be willing to serve as a class contact to begin gathering BFHS memorabilia, including photos, movies, sports letter jackets, and any item that was part of the history of BFHS.  Collected items will be catalogued by owner/donor, and stored in a secure room at the Blinn College campus.  Do you have some memorabilia you would consider donating or loaning to the association?  Let us know. Go to your class page on this website and leave your reply at the bottom of the page. There you can share your ideas on what you would like to see in the museum as well as list memorabilia you can donate or place on loan with the museum.

This museum project is being funded by BFHS alumni donations.  To date, 80% of the funds needed have been collected, but a lot more donations are still needed before the museum construction can begin. Additionally, funds will be needed to cover maintenance costs of the museum. All BFHS alumni is asked to rally to this call for help. Every donation, no matter how large or small will go a long way to preserving BFHS into the future. Your Bishop Forest Alumni Association needs your help now!

Remember to support your

Bishop Forest Alumni Association Museum.
